kerrie
We're so excited it could be called sad! We've had our girls a week past Sunday and Isabelle has laid our first egg (I'm thinking it Isabelle because her comb is the most red). I thought the ladies were not speaking to me when I went out to check on them at 2.30 before I left for the school run. I didn't let them out of the run because I wasn't going to be long and I don't like leaving them without someone watching them-even for the house. Anyhow, all 3 of them kind of sat down in the run with their backs to me and I assumed it was in protest. When we came back I went outside to open the run and my son checked the egg port and jumped up and down with excitment!! He had found our firsy egg! Mind you-the problem is now that he says as he found it and Isabelle is the chicken he chose from the breeder and named her the egg should be his. Which my twin girls aren't happy about-so I've said we need to wait until we have enough for everyone. It didn't go down well and my son is now sulking in his bedroom. I've rang my mum and sent texts to my friends who didn't think I was loosing the plot getting chickens and couldn't wait to get on here and tell everyone!! The kids have taken some photo's I'll put them on when I get a chance. Kerrie Ruby Isabelle 28/01/09 Daisy (Not forgetting the kids-Josh, Jennifer and Megan; cats Alfie and Ollie and puppy Oscar!) TillySue
Ionly joined this forum today & I can't believe how excited I am for you. I need to move house more quickly so we can have fresh eggs too! Are the kids OK with the chickens I was concerned that our monster might get too carried away! She is only 2 and a villian at best I've just weighed the egg and it is a very respectable 58 grams. kerrie
Thank you so much! Can't beleive how excited I still am (waiting for my best friend to get home from work so I can ring and tell her-texting will just not do!). The kids are fantastic with them. I have twin girls who are nearly 12 and my little boy is 9. We have 2 cats which we've had for nearly 4 years and a 20 week old cavalier king charles spaniel puppy who we've had for 12 weeks as well as the chooks. My son is self proclaimed 'chicken person' round here! He loves getting up and letting them out, hand feeding them, and will play for ages outside with them. They're great as they aren't as 'needy' (if that's the right word?) as the puppy, they're easy to feed and have very individual persoanalities. They are just as happy free ranging as they are when we're out in the nack garden-even Josh playing footie outside doesn't seem to bother them! Some of my friends have younger children and they are all waiting for their turn to come and collect the eggs! You'll love them and the little monster will too Ruby Isabelle 29/01/09 58 grams Daisy (Not forgtetting the kids Jennifer, Megan and Josh, cats Alfie and Ollie and puppy Oscar!) Tulip
Congratulations Kerrie, I know exactly how you're feeling - I was doing exactly the same last Friday!!!! It's amazing, isn't it? You feed these gorgeous birdies and they give you beautiful eggs and hours of entertainment in return. Wait til you see the colour of the yolk - a stunning deep orange, rather than pale-yellow supermarket eggs. Piccies please! T x
