fluffyknickers
Hi all, I am hopefully getting an eglu and two chickens. However as we are going on holiday in the summer for a week I am thinking ahead about what we would do. Does any one know of any chicken B&Bs near/in/around the Chelmsford in Essex area that I could take them too. I have no idea how much this would cost and if its too expensive have to re-think! Thanks everyone michelle x
stoice
Penguinmad isn't too far from you. This is her site... http://www.eglu2rent.co.uk/ You can either send your chooks on holiday with her or rent her eglu for someone elses garden while you are away. Hope you don't mind me volunteering you penguinmad!! Or you could get someone to pop round your house every few days to collect eggs, top up food and water. Olly
I'm a bit too far away to help, but there is a Chickensitters section here under 'Eglus and Cubes' which lists people who are willing to take your girls into their garden. When I go away for a weekend, I just fill up the feeders and water and leave them for up to two nights. I have a friend coming in to feed the cat and she will top up the feeders if necessary and check on the girls, but she doesn't usually have to do anything except collect any eggs. When I went away for two weeks last year (and this friend was on holiday with me) I contacted a local pet-sitting agency about feeding the cat. I asked if they could do chickens as well, and the lady was a bit taken aback but said she didn't mind - in fact, she loved it, especially when I said she could have the eggs. You have to accept that the level of care someone else will give your girls, is likely to be less than you would provide - but they will be fine. You may well find a neighbour who is keen to learn a bit more about chickens!
Barkisland
I'd say it really is worth sounding out your neighbours The worry of what to do about holidays put me off having chooks for years, but then I decided to just get them, and hopefully the Lord would provide ... I asked neighbours on both sides of our house if they had any objection to me having chickens and they didn't. And, to to my delight and surprise, they also both immediately offered to look after them for holidays. We went away recently, for the first time since getting them, and on our return our lovely neighbour popped in to say thanks for letting her chook sit! She, and her two little girls, fell in love with my chookies so much they are now planning to get some of their own And, of course, I will be delighted to return the favour and look after theirs any time.
