nutterly_uts
Can someone confirm my maths is right?! Its recommended to allow 4ft squared per chicken minimum right? (if this is wrong, my maths will be wrong lol) So if I make a run that is 11ft by 8ft (3.5m x 2.5m approx) I can have my wanted chickens? I want to add 5 or so chickens to my current 4. I have 2 silkie bantams, a bantam cross, and a big light sussex. I am wanting to add a cochin/orpington, another 1-2 silkies, and then 2 chickens that lay different color eggs to my current white/cream and occasional brown. I will be getting a cube, and building it into the run. Have I screwed this up?
wiblick
as far as I know it's 15ft squared which sounds huge but isn't really. it's 3ft X 5ft. The run you propose is 'ideal' for 6 chickens of the regular size so you should be fine with bantams in that space, and if you let them toddle about a bit in the garden on weekends or in the evenings in summer they'll be more than happy. nutterly_uts
Sorry you've lost me with the 15ft bit?
wiblick
Sorry if I've muddled you. For the outdoor run you thought 4ft square was what was necessary? In fact it's 15ft square BUT that is not as huge as it sounds. The run you will be making is going to be 11ft X 8ft which is 88ft square. Divide that by 15 and you get 5.86, basically 5.86 chickens, so round it up to 6. But you say you'll be keeping mostly bantams and they need less space so your run will be fine for them. Basically go ahead and build your run and house 9 mostly bantams in it and everyone will be fine!
