rosalyndavies
Has anyone had any experience of keeping Cockerels? My chicken partner & I are interested in getting a faverolle cockerel? We thought it may be less noisy & sweeter natured than other breeds. They look so fabulous & it would be really interesting to see the behavior & how it interacts with the hens. Can you still eat eggs which have been fertilised & how can you tell? Please excuse my ignorance if these seem obvious questions. Lewis
You can still eat fertile eggs. The only real way to tell if they are fertileis to incubate them and see, but I think if you crack a frech egg open there is a little ring in the yolk which means it's fertile. Cinnamon
There is unfortunately no such thing as a cockerel that is not noisy. My Indiana is teeny, a poland bantam, but you can hear him a mile away If you are rural & don't mind bing woken at 4am in the summer, which is when they go off, then its fine, but if you are in a town or built up area,or have nighbours then think very carefully indeed.
