debbie26pet
my chickens have a treat every day, but im thinking might be to much, and they will get to put to much weight on. they get a good handful of corn between them 1-2 a day and have mash on the tap in there run. then they may have like today they have a couple corn on cobs hanging. some days can be spud peelings or mash potatoes, pasta or toast marmite, or even couple apples to play football with. im thinking of cutting the treats bk to 3-4 times a week or that still to much? do you class chicken mash made with warm water a treat or not as it is using there food and as it just started to snow again, im thinking some mash before bed, or that to much? as they had 4 corn cobs between 20 of them about 2ish. the eggs have dropped again over last few days not sure if the wetaher (which im thinking of) ive started to worm them as well as they are due it, no signs though, and 3 days in i run out but more on order. and 2 have gone broody i do let them outin garden for couple hours in day depending on wtaher if nice bit longer etc.
Redwing
I dont count porridge made with pellets (or mash in your case) as a treat and often feed it in the mornng and evening Mine get a handful of corn in the afternoons if I am around and tuna once a week. I will often feed veg peelings (cooked) The main thing I watch quantity-wise is the corn
mccroft
Mine always have something about 4pm, and it's only that time because it allows my children to feed them after school. I've just given mine a pellet mash mixed with cooked potato peelings. The peelings are only added because I happen to have them. Mine see the pellet mash as a treat but it isn't really so we are all happy. I also give mine corn, but I also sprinkle it in containers and when it reaches about 1/2 to 1 foot high I put the container in the run, keeps them busy and then I just swop them with a new container when they've eaten it all. Corn grows really fast. When my others were free ranging I would scatter it over the bare soil beds and they would happily eat it and maybe that's why they left most of my garden alone. Egluntyne
I only give one treat a day...if that. Porridge made of pellets or layers mash and hot water counts as proper food, but spud peelings, pasta etc count as treats, and shouldn't be given too often or in too great a quantity, as the hens will get fat and tht can impact on their laying, and general well being.
