LJ's Chooks
Sorry for posting this here.... but i think it's more of a nest box thing than a nice thing topic.... Im not sure if im being stupid, but i will not buy chicken from the supermarket due to welfare and injected water - is the free range chicken in supermarkets injected with water to make it look bigger, heavier??? Organic too? However, we need to start using turkey mince, but the turkey mince in my butchers is ridiculously priced (as is their turkey) ... where as it is soooo cheap in the supermarkets. Is that because it is made from rubbish and the turkeys are kept in poor/intense conditions..... I dont know, and wont buy turkey/turkey mince from there untill i can find out.... I havent seen any 'free range' or 'organic' turkey/ turkey mince in the supermarket either....? can someone please shed a little light ... sorry, i just dont know anything about turkeys! Happy chickens!
Sorry, can't help you with mince, but ocado do some free range turkey products. I know what you mean - it's hard to trust how much water is added. I always tend to buy fresh meat rather than frozen, I think it's easier to tell somehow! Old Speckled Hen
Take a look here http://www.vegsoc.org/info/turkey.html Absolutely shocking. AND ducks fare just as badly http://www.rspca.org.uk/servlet/BlobServer?blobtable=RSPCABlob&blobcol=urlblob&blobkey=id&blobwhere=1170848210349&blobheader=application/pdf Both Turkeys and Ducks are reared intensively in the UK and endure similar conditions to the ones that Jamie and Hugh are battling to improve in the chicken world. Shirl
Now I feel bad. I've always opted for duck rather than chicken when eating out because I'd read that you can't intensively farm duck.
Guest
Jamie Oliver said that only geese can't be intensively farmed because they just die. Doesn't stop them being force fed for fois gras though. ocado/waitrose do free range turkey mince and, incidentally, 'faux gras' that's made from FR duck/goose liver that is not force fed. http://www.talkingretail.com/news/green-retail-news/7627-waitrose-launches-cruelty-free-faux-gras.html
