Gruffalo
Just a bit concerned about my chickens as they are extreamly soggy. We went away for the weekend so although we had a neighbour opening and closing the eglu door for us, they have been kept in their run for 3 days solid instead of free ranging round the garden. They are so pleased to be let out again they've been out in the rain all morning and look conpletely bedragled. Happy, but bedraggled! I'm just a bit worried about them drying out before the weather gets really cold and snowy tonight. Do feathers freeze?
MadMitch
I'm wondering the same too, as my lot are soaking.
cordelia
i imagine they will go under cover when too wet, and preen their feathers dry....mine have done that previously...... edited to say...the eglu has extra insulation on the outside currently due to the cold weather....not because i think their feathers will freeze I have rather unattractive bubble wrap around my eglu at night, as its been really cold here...it was supposed to be -7 the other night, and on Saturday, their water froze 4 times that I checked during the day.. Old Speckled Hen
When mine get wet and it's still raining I get them in an hour before bedtime so they get a chance to dry off a little. They have often looked like drowned chickens but have always emerged in the morning looking like they've been to the hairdressers. I wouldn't worry. It gets pretty warm when they snuggle up together at night. Mine live in a wooden coop and even when their droppings are frozen solid they are toasty warm. They'll be fine.
