kevsmith67
Hi all, I'm new to the idea of having chickens. Anyway I need some info regarding the height of fencing and some others things listed below. I'm looking at getting a coop cube or eglu and keeping it over to the left hand side of my garden. 1ST - My garden is all chipped with some paving slabs dotted around. The run area for the chickens I was thinking of doing would be just soil and bark shavings etc and replace every month or so. Would this be ok and then be able to let them roam around on the chipped area also, would the chiped area be fine for them? 2ND - I have two "Ooops, word censored!"zu's would they be ok with the chickens, has anyone that has "Ooops, word censored!"zu's on the forum had any problems with introducing them to chickens? 3RD - The fence height in my garden to the left is 6ft which I think would be ok the fence to the right hand side is only 4ft which I intend to extend up to 6ft. The problem on the right hand side of my garden is the neighbour has kennels for three labrador gun dogs they are always in the kennels and very rarely out on there paved are in their garden. Would thesee dogs, being gundogs sense and be excited about chickens roaming around on the other side of the fence. if anyone has some advice it would be much appreciated. thanks
sandyhas3chucks
Just depends on the dogs really, they all vary so. My my neighbours had a boxer that was INTENT on getting my girls. She got over 8 ft no problem. They put trellis up with an over hang their side much like you see in safari parks and zoos. It seemed to stop her but thankfully she had to be rehomed where there were NO children! phew as many on the forum may recall was the horridest time out! Bad enbough worrying about afoxes with out a neighbouring dog. I personally have 3 labs that come to stay that are totally disintersted in my girls And wander around happily with them! but they are not trained to gun. as they are in their run, wouldn't think they wil bother much, should think they wil get used to noises! And as for yours, they can be fiesty but I would be surprised if even if they do have a go that they would do much damage with those jaws! You will need to take it slowly And plan & see. Lots more will offere their experince too, try a search for dogs see if you can find old threads
chelsea
our garden is mostly chippings, pebbles, decking with a tiny patch of grass and my lot manage fine free ranging in our garden. With regards to your own dogs, I cant really advise on the breed to be honest as everyones dogs are different, trained different etc. What are they like with garden birds? or cats? do they dislike small fluffy things? I would be cautious with any chicken v dog introduction and do things gradually ( leads at first and if you are concerned never leave your hens alone with your dogs.) Only you know your dogs. Next doors dogs will certainly be aware of chickens I would imagine with them being gun dogs they could smell them and they will hear them. If they are in kennels then they should be ok, but you might want to keep your hens in from free ranging if you know the dogs are out just in case. Maybe have a word with your neighbour so they can be aware you are getting some chickens.
Gamebird
Hi all, I'm new to the idea of having chickens. Would this be ok and then be able to let them roam around on the chipped area also, would the chiped area be fine for them? They say wood chip is better for runs because bark can harbour fungal spores unsuitable for chickens. I would think the chipped areas would be fine for chickin roaming. 2ND - I have two "Ooops, word censored!"zu's would they be ok with the chickens, has anyone that has "Ooops, word censored!"zu's on the forum had any problems with introducing them to chickens? Sorry I have no experience with this breed so not sure how they would react. There is a post on how to introduce dogs to chickens but the 'search' facility has been temporarily removed so I can't find it. 3RD - The fence height in my garden to the left is 6ft which I think would be ok the fence to the right hand side is only 4ft which I intend to extend up to 6ft. The problem on the right hand side of my garden is the neighbour has kennels for three labrador gun dogs they are always in kennels and very rarely out on there paved are in their garden. Would thesee dogs, being gundogs sense and be excited about chickens roaming around on the other side of the fence. It depends on how well trained the gundogs are. If they are properly trained then they will only retrieve what the handler asks. However, if they are in kennels then it probably won't be a problem. You might ask your neighbour how he thinks his dogs would react.. if anyone has some advice it would be much appreciated. thanks I hope this helps but I'm sure there will be lots of other good advice for you to think about.
