Introducing cockerels - good or bad idea?

Recommended Posts

I am hoping that some of you lovely wise knowledgable practical people will be able to advise re my dilemma ...

I have the offer of 2 cockerels - one a Maran, one a smaller bantam type (unknown breed) - who live together currently. How will my 3 established girls react? Might they get hurt from an enthusiastic bigger cockerel? I don't want to breed from my girls but would like to expand the flock.

Any thoughts please?

Cockerels kept together will fight eventually - to the death. All cockerels crow - loudly. So, you need to be able to keep them separately with their own girls AND you need to live in the country - or with very, very nice neighbours.

If you want a cockerel, I'd only get one - but remembering the noise aspect too.

I raised 4 cockerals from chicks thinking they where hens, one was packed very badly by the others at around 16 weeks, BF took care of it because it was in pain & the other 3 fought each other & the hens at 20ish weeks, the BF then killed two & we now have harmony...& eggs :D

1 is enough.
