We have had our 6 lovely chooks for about 3 weeks. I was recommended to use Orego-Stim every day in their water for their general health. I have also been adding the Battle Tonic to the water to help them to settle in.

1) Is it wrong to mix these

2) Now they have settled in, should I drop the Battle Tonic off, and only re-use it if they seem under the weather

I have some Barrier Louse powder but does that do the same as Diaton, and is Diaton better as it can be put into their feed.

How soon and how often should it be used

Would it be good to get Garlic powder and what is it mainly for

What is Citricidal, and do I need that aswell

Poultry Spice

I know I need to worm after about 3-4 months, Does the Diaton do that aswell or do I need Flubenvet or something

Is there anything else I should get

I don't mind how much these things cost, or how many I need to get, I just want to do the best for the girls. Totally

Hello PeckyBeak & welcome to the forum . Poor you, it's all really confusing and worrying, isn't it . I remember that feeling well . I'll try to help with some of your questions .

I'm afraid I've never used either of these but hopefully someone else can advise.

I have some Barrier Louse powder but does that do the same as Diaton, and is Diaton better as it can be put into their feed. How soon and how often should it be used

I use Diatom brushed all round the roosting bars each time I clean the eglu out. It should help prevent red mite (less likely now the roosting bars are plastic but not totally). I know you can put it in their feed but I don't. I also use Red Mite powder sprinkled into their nestbox after a clean. I occasionally dust this under their armpits too. When Molly had lice, I used Johnsons Anti Lice & Mite spray which worked really well (egg withdrawal period though).

Garlic powder is very good at reducing the smell of their poops. Just add a teaspoon to a grub daily.

What is Citricidal, and do I need that aswell

I have Citricidal but haven't used it yet. It is apparently good for treating sniffles and colds.

Poultry Spice

I add Poultry Spice to their pellets along with the garlic powder. It's a general tonic (although some people don't add it all the time, just after a moult for example)

I think Diatom can help as a preventative but Flubenvet is a treatment which people tend to administer every 3-4 months just as a precaution, whether you spot worms in the poops or not.

Is there anything else I should get

Don't panic that you need it all right at the start. You'll pick up from the forum which things you want to get and which you aren't bothered about. The only thing you haven't mentioned, which I do use and like, is Bokashi bran. This can be added to their pellets too. It firms up the poops a treat and is good for their digestion.

I have some Barrier Louse powder but does that do the same as Diaton, and is Diaton better as it can be put into their feed. personally I have both but the diatom can be used on the bird as well as in the food so would do on its own

Would it be good to get Garlic powder and what is it mainly for you put a teaspoon full in the food and it helps stop the poo smelling too bad

What is Citricidal, and do I need that aswell its a natural grapefruit extract used for colds (in humans too!) a few drops in the water helps a sneezing chook

Is there anything else I should get Apple Cider Vinegar (from horsey places not the supermarket stuff) is good for them, you add it to the water

I have used Battles throughout the winter but as I ran out of this last week, I bought Lifeguard today to give it a go.

we swear by bokashi for poos, for probiotic benefits and for making the poo compost even better!

Thanks everyone for your help on this, much happier now I have some idea what to do and I have ordered various lotions and potions from Omlet and from Flyte So Fancy. When it all arrives, the girls should be well pleased with their lovely sweet smelling cube and run.

We also now have two chooks laying, as Ginger laid her first egg today. Rhoda, (Rhode Island Red) has been laying since we got her 3 weeks ago, she laid in the cardboard box on the way home Right, I'm off to make an Egg Custard Tart

I always think of curry when I smell it
