I re-homed 4 ex-bats in June last year and soon after lost the first to what the vet said was egg peritonitis. About a month ago I had a previously very heathly hem become listless and porrly, not eating drinking and very swollen tummy. I took her to the vet and they weren't sure but after looking in a book said probabley egg peritonitis we tried treating her with antibiotics but nothing helped and she got steady worse, and died on Friday. As we found eggs in her poop we treated all three, (her before she died) with coxy meds. The other two seemed fine until Sunday went one of the two (Mrs Miggins) looked very down, she lost the colour to her comb, and it has gone black tinged round the edge, she was just standing very listless and she has dull poor looking feathers. She also seems to have a black spot on her pad on the bottom of her foot and spends lots of time grooming herself and particulary pecking at both feet. I can't find a vet who knows more than me about chickens so it is worse than useless taking her there. She is doing very green and watery poops and doesn't want to eat or drink (apart from mealworms). She is not swollen and I don't think it is egg peritonitis, as she seems different to the others who were ill. I have looked in the poultry doctor book and been treating her with nux vom crushed mixed in water and dropped into her mouth for the last few days and find this is not improving her but she isn't getting worse. I am very concerned as our last girl (Milldred) is in prime health and will be left alone if Mrs Miggins dies. I haven't wormed them, but have been treating their food and coop and them with the Diatomaceous Earth powder since December whcih saw a great upturn in health for all three. sandyhas3chucks Posted February 18, 2009 Share Posted February 18, 2009 Some one more experienced will be along but in the mean time, did you see this in the ref section? viewtopic.php?f=41&t=29183 Also try her. http://www.rcvs.org.uk/ use the advance find on find a vet, you may find someone by calling around that has more exp. but if it is the above it is suposed to be so rare and common in turkeys that most general vets will not think about it. I dont really know what could be wrong im afraid the green poos & not eating and drinking isnt a good sign though... maybe bring her in the warm, & try and get some form of liquid in to her - even if its just a sloppy pellet porridge. Egluntyne Posted February 18, 2009 Share Posted February 18, 2009 I'd be inclined to worm her with Flubenvet for starters, and maybe keep her on a basic diet of just pellets with a little bokashi bran added, and water for a few days.
