I have been thinking that i would like to have some chicks. However i don't really want to hatch them because i know we can't keep roosters and i wouldn't know what to do with them if we did hatch some.

 

So i thought the next logical way was to get some day old chicks. I am starting to research now so we can possibly get some when it gets warmer. I have heard that some chicks can be sexed at a day old, does anyone have a list of the chicks that can be? Also any reccomendations on breeders in the Cheshire area? Also if we were to get day old chicks presumably we would be best getting large fowl or bantams not to mix them because otherwise the bantams may get attacked when they get older?

 

I'm very broody for some chicks today as we have been to Tatton Park and they had some week old chicks that people could stroke. We also got to learn more about incubation and got to see an egg moving in water(appartly should hatch tomorrow) and sadly an egg in which the chick had died(saw a large space using a candler?)

If you can get hold of some of the standard hybrids, they can be fairly reliably sexed as day olds. Warrens/rangers; black rocks and bluebelles look the easiect to sex as they have marked colour differences at day old.

Never having been interested in keping chicks I never knew this, but how interesting.

 

I didn't know they were that easy to tell apart so young.
