chooklady
Having just seen Snowy's new greenhouse I was wondering do they need to be in a position of full sunshine or could you put one in a shady spot? The one I had when I was younger was in full sun.
Valkyrie
Well mine is sort of half and half. It gets shading from a fence, so is on the south side of our garden. It still gets very hot in summer, but the shade on one side gives a little bit of light relief. I think it needs to have some sun to ripen the toms etc., but partial shade would be fine. Our next door neighbour's greenhouse is in shade most of the day, but I don't think she has had much success - pansies grew well - and only uses it for storage now. Snowy
Mine is in the sunniest corner of the garden. You can always ventilate to reduce the heat, but harder if it's in shade to maintain any decent warmth in it.
chooklady
Thanks, the only place I have is shaded by a spruce tree from mext door, will have to give it some more thought.
Valkyrie
I forgot to add that most of the greenhouse is in sun for most of the day, it is just one side that is shady (saves putting shading material all over), the roof is in constant sun and the right hand side is shaded only in the late evenings. We don't have a tree to contend with, luckily. However so saying that, my FIL has his greenhouse mostly in shade where it is surrounded by lilacs and a conifer - he gets fantastic crops in the summer!
