jos
Peanut has been with me for a year and has been in good health up to about 4 days ago. She has now developed a large squishy crop and a blue comb. She is drinking well but will only eat apple. Absolutely nothing else, not mash, pellets not even her previously adored meal worms. Just apple. She does not have smelly breath but she does have white runny poos. I have taken her to the vet and she has been wormed. Currently she is also on antibiotics. I have tried olive oil, massage, (she won't eat maggots) and pro biotic yoghurt. Nothing seems to be working. I spent ages yestrday gently massaging her crop on and off through the day and it did go down quite a bit but is back up today. She is drinking lots so I would have thought any blockage would have been well softened by now, especially with the massage, which I am continuing. Is there anything else I could/should be doing? Do their crop muscles sometimes just give up? I am at a loss but desperatly want to help her. J Edited March 28, 2009 by Guest
theherd123
Im sorry to hear your little x battery girl is unwell. Im sure the massage will help so keep it up if you think her crop is blocked Before now i have made up very sloppy porridge and blitzed it in the liquidiser and syringed a little into a chooks beak. Keeping your chooky as well fed as possible is important. Is her comb still blue? If so have you looked at the homeopathy remedies for chooks? (Link below) viewtopic.php?f=41&t=19927&view=unread#unread One of my ex battery girls recently had a very blue comb and the Adonis & Digitalis remedies worked brilliantly, within 4 days her comb was red again and she was back eating. Do keep us posted on how she is doing.

jos
Buffie or Theherd could you please advise me how much 30c dosage for the digitalis is equivalent to? ie is it a full pipette or a teaspoon full or a tablespoon? Many thanks, J
sandyhas3chucks
Squishy crop with smell is sour and therefore the massage won't work, nor maggots. Mine never eat the maggots anyway when you positively need them too. Antibiotics won't help a sour crop uness there is an infection. You could try oral daktarin which may fix it, along with yoghurt & bokashi. This is available over the counter be sure to get oral, the dose is about pea saize 3 times a day but beware it is goopey sticky and they don't like it. it may need Nystatin, from the vet depending on th cause. metronizidol also from the vet is something else given but if it is a yeast thing it will need nytsatin. Antibiotics unfortunately can increase a YEAST INFECTION. all depending on what/why and how bad, but the oral Dactarin as I say you can get from the chemest under a £5 and may help. good luck. Avipro also very good as is ACv in the water.

Many thanks, J Sorry for delay in reply i have been away for weekend. My homeopathic remedies i bought were pillules so i didnt need to measure them out but personally i would just give your chook 1 drop of each per day. It may be best to do some reading around this first. Hope that helps How is your chook now?
jos
Thanks. I have been giving her a drop per day. Her comb is still blue but at least her crop is emptying better. She still only really wants to eat apple so is not getting the goodness she needs but while she is happy pottering around with her friends I will just keep an eye on her and take each day as it comes. Hen Watch
Jos, will she eat pellet porridge? You can put a bit of live bio yoghurt in it too. My girl had sour crop last year and I worried she wasn't getting any nutrients or water. So I added a pint of warm water to pellets to make a very watery sludge. She did eat that (in fact they all got quite a liking for it and I had to wean them back onto pellets a few months later).
theherd123
You could also try and add some Avipro to her water too. Try and encourage her as much as possible to eat the layers pellets or layers porridge and use a syringe if needed as she will be losing weight fast now if she is still only eating apple. How is her comb now? Keep us posted on her progress.
jos
hello, I am trying to get her to eat a porridge of pellets/mash. I have put lifeguard in her water and am bringing her in from the others for a few hours each day so she has time to eat what ever she will eat away from the others. The rest of the time she is pottering outside, occasionaly pecking around. Her tail is up and she looks quite happy but her comb is still blue and she is much slower than the others. Her crop still needs some massage but is much much better than it was. Her poohs are still a bit runny. I am still giving her the homeopathic stuff and keeping everything crossed for her. Thanks for all your concern. J
