Single hen

Any advice on what else I can try? We are going to try with a different bit later as we've put the same one on twice.

 

We think she's obviously a very clever girl, but we'd really prefer her to keep it on!

If you put a bumper bit on properly, it is impossible for the hen to get it off (although when it gets brittle it can snap after six months or so).

 

The two prongs have to be wedged very firmly in the nostrils. Make sure you have identified the nostrils: there are other ridges and dents higher up the beak which will hold the bit on loosely, but are useless.

 

My technique is to get the bit in the mouth first, then put the prongs on the top of the beak and push them downwards, one each side. The prongs then go evenly and very firmly into the nostrils. You should not be able to see the prongs at all once they are in.

 

It's not nice, but cannabalistic hens aren't nice either.
