Feed drinking equipment?? Advice pls

Recommended Posts

Ok went to get one of those little plastic feeders today(different ones on sale)I fancied getting one that hanged up as the birds coming on tuesday are use to that type.

But after dismantling it and sending the parts over the shop floor  thought what a pain to take unscrew the blooming thing to fill it up especially if it has one of those lids on(which i wanted to keep it dry)

Anyway i came away with nothing so am resorting to scrubbing a galvanised dog dish(which isnt that deep) and I do have a proper galvanised feed tray 1ft by 4" plus i do have one of those big galvanised drinkers.

Do i need to buy the plastic feeders green and white ones that are commonly seen??? or will the hens just eat out a dish?

I know i will get grub /glugs with the cube but am a bit confused about the proper feeding stations??? let me know please

I have a couple of lodgers arriving on tuesday so need to keep them sorted prior to cube coming the following week

indie :?

My lot eat out of any container.

Grub feeder x 2

Metal dog bowl (for treats only so when they see it they come running)

Coup cup bought from a pet shop

Old icecream tubs which I mix up their "pellets & water porridge"

Old china childrens breakfast bowl

My lot are not that fussy as long as they get food and I have 2 or 3 feed stations in the run as I have one girl at the bottom of the pecking order and I like to ensure she gets access to food.

Like Hen Watch mine will use just about anything but their favourite drinking station is the green and white mushroom drinker that I got from Thornes when the newbies arrived.

It is like this one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-5-LITRE-DRINKER-3KG-FEEDER-SET-CHICKEN-POULTRY-EGGS_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1686Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem360139268349QQitemZ360139268349QQptZUKQ5fPetQ5fSuppliesQ5fPoultryQQsalenotsupported

I did have it standing on it's nifty extendable legs but they still managed to fill it with Aubiose so now I have hung it on a spare hanging basket bracket (idea stolen from Thornes) and it stays clean and they love it. The Glug and S.Glug are ignored by all four girls.

Remember you shouldn`t put ACV in the dog bowl as it will react to the metal :D

I use these green & white feeders & drinkers. The water one stands on a upturned terracotta pot, so it is at hen head height - therefore no bedding or poo gets in it - they will drink out of the glug, but I find the water in there gets dirtier, plus my green/white one is bigger. For food I used the glug successfully for 6 months, then one chicken took to scooping out all the food onto the run floor (not just what she wanted to eat) - the green/white one I use is bigger than the grub, plus the white spike things hold the food in the tray and so she cannot scoop it out onto the floor - this is hung by an S hook from a garden cane across the cube run.

I would avoid fod water at ground level for hygiene reasons - they will get it very dirty.

Thanks very much garden bracket now and raised water slightly

Very useful...I did half think they wouldnt starve and obviously they scratch around...great

If u think chickens are messy my ducks use to poop in their food containers/water containers and still look gleaming white and healthy Aylesburys!!!

thank you
