cleaning out advice please

Recommended Posts

I have had my girls for over a week now and am thoroughly enjoying them. It's fascinating how each of them have such different personalities :)

I was hoping I could ask for some advice. What cleaning products are the best to use for cleaning up? as lets face it they do more than their fair share of making poop mess!

I just wanted to use something that isn't too pungent or corrosive.....Help please

Do you mean cleaning the housing (eglu/cube or wooden coup) or the run?

With my plastic (green eglu) I just use washing up liquid and water. Some on here have power washers they use. I expect other folk on the forum use different chicken disinfectants they can recomend to you.

In their run I use Auboise horse bedding which soaks up poos really well and I change it about once a month.

I use Ecover in hot water for scrubbing the cube. And its power washed off by OH with the power washer - comes up lovely.

Around the garden (slabs, pebbles, decking) again just power hosed/washed down with neat water and no liquids/chemicals. In the summer the poos dry up nicely so can just be swept away! :vom:

I've only had mine, an Eglu and 3 'girls', for 5 weeks so not an expert at all but for all it's worth I use Ecover washing up liquid, a tiny bit, in hot water every week to clean the whole thing and line the droppings tray every day with newspaper which is easy to throw into the composter and replace with a fresh sheet. I haven't needed to disinfect yet but believe this should be done every 3 months or so. Mine free range so don't have run to clean.

It is amazing about their totally different personalities isn't it. My friends think I'm going mad!

I use Ecover and water to wash the poop tray and roosting bars. I then line the poop tray with newspaper and pop straw in the nesting box, although they seem to love the straw -they walk around the run with it in their mouths like cigarettes hanging out :lol: Naughty girls.

Hi,

oh for the many folded joy of a jet washer.

we jet wash the eglu (mark 2 - has plastic roosting bars) and in this weather let the uv rays do their work and leave it all exposed to the air. In the wetter weather a dab of ecover or method washing up stuff.

I line their droppings tray with shredded paper which goes straight in to the wormery/compost bin and the nesting box with straw.

Great fun aren't they, had two of them on my lap yesterday after the sultanas -checky devils
