This is an update on our Cuckoo Maran, Sunflower, who we've only had just over a fortnight.

 

She hasn't had a great time since arriving with us. She was bullied mercilessly for the first week or so, but then there seemed to be some settling down. She shares an Eglu with a White Star.

 

We put Stockholm Tar on her wing and tail feathers when the bullying was at it's worst, but that seemed to upset her and she's constantly trying to pick it off. Such horrible sticky nasty stuff - would never use again.

 

Anyway, started noticing that Sunflower was standing in the same spot alot with her eyes closed and tail down and also that she was doing strange watery yellow poo. This was on Friday. By Saturday she was much the same, but not really eating. We took her to the vet (luckily they have a poultry specialist) who said she had some strange lumps in her crop and possible peritonitis. He gave her a shot of antibiotics and said she had a 50/50 chance. We brought her home and kept her indoors in a cardboard box. We massaged her crop and seemed to have moved the blockage there, but that hasn't made any difference to her health. She has eaten nothing today and drunk little. All she does is peck at the tar on her feathers. It's so pitiful to watch. Vet has told me to ring him in the morning (Tues) so I will do that. Looks like we might have to have her put to sleep unless nature takes its course before then.

 

On the other hand, Blossom, the White Star, is fighting fit and barely seems to have missed Sunflower's presence. We'll have to look into getting a replacement presuming the worst happens to Sunflower.

 

Anyone got any advice?

So sorry to hear you are still having a bad time. She's had antibiotics so hope that helps if its peritonitis. Yellow poo can normal or I've read it can be coccidiosis which is treated with antibiotics so both are covered.

I'm sure someone experienced will be along soon but you could try syringing a bit of water into her beak. Don't know but would it be worth trying to cut some of the feathers off that have stockholm tar on? On the positive side if she cares what her feathers are like perhaps she is feeling better. Fingers crossed for you.

Sorry to hear it. I wonder if she has been off colour from the outset and this could be why Blossom is making a nuisance of herself. They often bully a sick hen.

 

Here's hoping she perks up. It might be worth syringing a little water into her beak now and then to help stop her becoming dehydrated.

Also bacterial infection. can be vivid yelllow.. again antibiotics. make sure she doesn't get dehydrated. fingers crossed
