kitchen scraps and DEFRA

Recommended Posts

So, if I take a few bites out of one, and then give the rest to the chicks, how is that different?!

So far as I am aware what you eat yourself is not covered by DEFRA, so if you eat the left overs from the hens food that should be fine. Having seen what some folk on this board get for their chooks I think you'll be doing quite well :drool:

So provided our weekly shop is for the chickens, and then we eat the leftovers (say the cauliflower in the middle when it's left over after we've bought the chicks one for the outside leaves), we're ok :whistle::lol:

Can I get my mum to write me a note?

She looked in my fridge when visiting once and was most impressed by all the fruit and vegetables in there. However, she suddently went quiet when she realised I had not, of course, changed 30+ years of me not eating healthy stuff  , everything had been purchased from Sainsburys solely for the rabbits; so mum can help me prove the greens are not kitchen waste.

But when I give greens to the chickens, could this be classed as waste from the rabbits? Figure that one out DEFRA!

Egluntine - pls can you get me one of those jackets too, I will send you a cheque ! x

This explains a lot. When I strated looking into getting chickens I was looking at Ozzie websites, which all said feed your chickens meat (as do a load of books I took out of the libruary here), but when I looked at UK sites they all said do not feed meat. I couldn't work out why the opinion would be so different, but DEFRA is obviously the reason.

That's right

Chickens (like most birds) are omnivores and will happily eat meat and thrive on it. The DEFRA regs are to prevent the spread of any diseases across species... from what I can see, most of these diseases are caused/accelerated by intensive farming process in the first place, but that's a whole new soapbox!
