Chook n Boo Mum
If you can manage to pick the softie up, is it ok to use it? I opened the cube roof this morning to check for the softie which seems to be happening on an almost daily basis at the mo, and although it was difficult to handle, the membrane and merest hint of a shell was intact. As soon as I got it indoors I split the membrane & put into a bowl & put it in the fridge. Would I be able to use it in a quiche for tea tonight or not? It had been laid on the bars & landed in the (almost clean!!) poo tray. I've read that the people who are using the Battery Hen feed are finding their incidence of softies has dropped, would it be worth a try? I add most of the extra goodies in this mix to my chooks food anyway, but I'm almost ready to try anything! They have grit & oyster shell available and limestone flour in their pellets & mash. The number of eggs I lose would possibly make up the difference in price between my normal food & the new stuff, certainly a good bit of it at least! Funnily enough it seems to be one of my original chooks who is producing the softies rather than the older batties, who I might have expected to be more prone. The batties do produce some of the strangest shaped & wrinkled eggs I've ever seen though!! Many thanks in anticipation, Sha x
Tara123
Funny you should ask that because I was talking to my neighbour the other day and he said he always used to use the softies. I'm not sure whether its OK too but he's still alive I personally don't use them but maybe some one else will have a better idea on whether it is safe too or not. Sorry can't help with your other question regarding feed. Did you make the quiche in the end using the softie?
Chook n Boo Mum
I made the quiche, but not that one no, but have since scrambled at least one! The one in the question above, as I wasn't sure how long it had been sitting in the tray I thought I'd better not take the risk, but the scrambled one was laid on the grass in front of me, so was whisked indoors for lunch! I've just been out to collect the eggs and found 2 broken ones, one completely shell-less & one obviously a broken shell in the nest boxes. Quite apart from the mess it makes, it's concerning me a little now. Off I go to clean the cubes Sha x
