Budgies
I've voted "no" because Mango had the implant put in last Wednesday evening, but we had to have her put down on the Friday because she had filled up with fluid again from her egg peritonitis and was struggling to breathe when resting, which we didn't feel was fair on her. That said, anecdotally my vet's friend, who is also a vet HAS had success in one chicken, and far more success so far in other birds. I think it's only just starting to be used in chooks, so the lack of evidence doesn't mean very much right now.
sandyhas3chucks
thanks for voting.. there may be more out there than we know.. on another forum 3 or was it 4 had same unhappy result. My vet is going to contact the manufacturers for more info. They have not had good results with parrots either. It was because of Mango that I spoke with my Vet about it on Wednesday, as I felt I would have made diferent decision with my last girl, had I known about it. I guess that IS the problem with unlicensed products. no test done, unfortunately there is no monitoring of the results either I don't think. It's target group is dogs and the dosing even there is some what guesstamatic. There is a lot of controversy about it in the "dog world" too. However I totally understand anyone trying it as a last resort. Would I have used it 4 weeks ago...? probably except my Vet would have adviced against it. Would I use it tomorrow. Very probably not until I get more info. Hense starting this thread.
Budgies
Glad to be of help! Incidentally, my vet told me that of all the birds, the parrots tend to have a much less tenacious hold on life. For that reason, maybe the results of implanting in them has a poor result - but it might reflect the bird's vulnerability generally rather than a lack of success with the implant, if that makes sense! I found it very hard to know what to do - a friend of mine who lives a long way away has a veterinarian husband, and he advised against the implant, simply because he said it sounded a bit experimental. But the fact that there is a chicken out there somewhere who has had an implant and is living happily swayed me to give it a try! Good luck, maybe you should try also posting this thread on other poultry keeping forums too, widen the net?!
chelsea
We are discussing this procedure with our vet for Ella. Our vet is very good (loves & respects chickens - even keeps them!) and is open to new treatments. I will let you know the outcome.
