I'm not sure if this is the correct section so please move if inappropriate. We have a selection of picture and mirror frames that we've collected over the years. None of them match or suit our decor but I wondered if it would be possible to spray them with some sort of paint either in white or silver. I'm looking at spraying over gilt and varnished wood frames. Is there a particular product that would suit this job and has anyone had any success using spray paint ie does it go blotchy etc? Any advice much appreciated.

If they're varnished or gilt I'd recommend sanding them down first, so then coverage is even and stays on better.

Thanks for the reply, that's a very good point. Unfortunately some of the frames, particularly the gilt one, are very ornate and virtually impossible to sand! Maybe I should go into one of the art supplies stores and see if they have any suggestions?

I've 'redecorated' picture frames in the past. I just used a cheap water based primer from B&Q or similar, then repainted them with emulsion tester pots. The primer covers just about everything and anything. You could apply it with a fine brush for the ornate ones, then respray with one of the plastikote decorative paints.

 

Primer and plasticote is fab - we had naff black speckled bathroom tiles in our fireplace. I primed them, then sprayed with gold plastikote base paint, then sprayed over that with a cream crackling paint. It looks great! It is worth doing a small practice area first to get the feel of how evenly it sprays, but they do give a very good result.

Thanks for the tips. I bought a can of white satin Plasticote spray paint and went to town! It took a couple of coats but I'm really pleased with the results and they dried very quickly.
