Grovefarm
Hi all, I wonder if any of you might know what this is, one of my girls has quickly developed this weird issue. Her poo is runny and because of this is now sticking to her rear feathers. Also she has a very swollen vent, On closer inspection it looks a bit inside or to me (or without being crude like a testicle). There does not seem to be any pain and i did move it a bit when I caught her to investigate. This also has not affected her egg laying ability. It looks very odd and looking round the net I can not see anything quite like it. Taking it to the vet wont do her any good as none of them round here know anything about chickens. Thanks Dale
Egluntyne
Has she got a prolapse? ie has the laying tackle turned its lower part inside out and got stuck?
Redwing
Link to pic of prolapse in this thread viewtopic.php?f=37&t=43538 This one had a sad ending but its not always this bad so don't panic
Grovefarm
Thanks all for the replies, I think it is a prolapse. although Its not quite a bloody as all the pics I've seen. Luckily I've got a couple of hen houses spare so I can darken those to separate her for a couple days, and bit of honey and luck hopefully she'll make a full recovery. Redwing
When one of my hens had a prolapse it wasn't as bad as that either it was pink and shiny if at a bit bulgy but that was the only pic I could think of when you posted Good luck!
Egluntyne
Separating her is an excellent idea. The others might show an undue interest in the prolapse, and start pecking her. You could bathe it with tepid water and apply haemorrhoid ointment to shrink it which will enable you to push it back in.
Grovefarm
Thanks for the tips everyone, unfortunately she died some time last night, i did try using honey on her prolapse but evidentally that didnt work. Although she was a regular layer so it may have actually been not directly the prolapse that caused it.
