Three hens four eggs

Recommended Posts

Can anyone help? I am new to chickens and have had three lovely girls for just over four weeks. For the past three days I have been getting four eggs a day. When I put them to bed a night there are no eggs. In the morning at about 8 there are usually three eggs and then about 11 there is another. Is this normal? Will it harm my chickens?

Welcome to the forum :) . Lucky you, I'm lucky to get 2 a day from 3 chickens  . I suspect they're just getting into the swing of things laying-wise and it should settle down soon. I shouldn't imagine it's doing the hen any harm - it would be more of a problem if the eggs were forming but weren't coming out!

Sometimes you can get an early morning egg then an afternoon egg (which is tomorrow's egg early, if you see what I mean!).

I'll be interested to know how long this goes on for :) .

Well I had four eggs for a few more days and i worked out that it was Martha who was laying two eggs a day. Yesterday when I let them out it was obvious she was not well. She was very distressed so i took her to the vet and she told me there was an egg stuck inside her and she needed an operation to remove it (£35). Alas she didnt make it, apparently she was over stimulated and thats why i was getting the two eggs. It was too much for her little body and she died. Sob
