My compost bins are absolutely crawling, over run by black ants. I've not seen them before, they are usually very healthy looking with hundreds of worms. is this a problem that needs dealing with?

How strange.... if it was me I might be tempted to put ant powder round the outside and boiling water over the inside

sounds like your compost is too dry but the ants will do no harm and some benefit in terms of aeration and moving stuff around

 

got any males in the house to 'water' it ?

Unless they're really bothering you I'd leave it - the ants will be beneficial. I have had them living in the compost heap before, and I think it indicates that it's probably a bit dry. You could just try watering it a bit to discourage them.
