New to keeping chooks so possibly bullying or pecking order?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, As the title says we are new to this and we bought our first chickens at the weekend.

We bought a black rock and a red star on Saturday and other then a liitle peck didn't see any problems.

I have bought a light sussex today as didn't want to long a period between them, but today i have witnessed from the sussex what i would class as serious pecking and looks quite frightening! Having looked through other threads i see the new chicken getting picked on but this is the other way around.

Is this normal? Is it intimidatation as she was a lone chicken being introduced to 2 chickens and how can you tell if this is 'normal' or bullying?

I am worried that i have made a mistake and we see blood!

Any advice would be gratfully received.

Many Thanks.

I have no experience, so can't offer any advice. It does seem backwards, though. I'm wondering how long the pecking goes on. I have 3 who are 10 weeks old and the "top hen" is always chasing, pecking and making the other two squak. No blood yet. But do they always do this? Or do they mellow with age?
