Rubyismyduck
As some of you may know Ruby, the duck that ran away, has a sister from the same brood, Ern, she has started gong broody and has been sitting on 10 eggs for about a month. we are expecting ducklings anytime now because we know they are fertile. we are planning on keeping 2 girls and raise them to make them friendly (as ruby ern and drake where bought as adults) and i have a couple of questions. is it normal for ern to hiss and peak at me when i go to her nest? how to you tell the gender of new borns? and at what age can i take two from ern. it is making me feel so much better about the loss of ruby. she is an aunty and she will alwas be remembered ps. ruby you know you are always welcome home, we still love you. please come back
Guest
yes your duck will protect her nest so will hiss at you, best to try to leave them alone. You wont be able to sex the ducks until they have their feathers(males curly tail tip/females no curly tail tip) obviously i dont know what breed your ducks are but the males are usually prettier coloured than the females. But that doesnt always follow ie Khakis and Aylesburys same coloured. Not sure why you are removing 2? are they wild mallards?? good luck indie
Lewis
If you're removing 2 to put them in a brooder you can do it whenever, but the duck might try and attack you
