Sick chicken...help!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone -

My 11 week old EE wouldn't open one of her eyes Friday morning. I took her to an avian vet who said it isn't conjunctivitis and there's nothing in there bothering her. She anesthestized her eye and went in to look, but nothing. The eye isn't oozing, or anything, it's just closed. Looks a little dry to me, but that could just be the way her eyes look closed.

Anyway she's on a sulfa drug for 14 days. (I read in Damerow's Chicken Health Handbook it should be no more than 7 0r 10 days, can't remember) So that has me concerned. She's being tested for a bacterial infection and worms.

Yesterday afternoon her poo started being more water than actual feces. Today I've seen her poo only clear water. Her eating and drinking have been fine. But today, she's eating a little less. She's not lethargic at all, but also not really herself.

I'm calling for some of the test results today. Anyone have any experience like this or ideas? I'm baffled and worried.

Thanks!

Oh dear Mary, aren't they a worry when they are ill? I can offer no help I am afraid, but by taking her to the vets, you are doing all you possibly can!

Hope the test results find something to identify what the problem might be.

All I can suggest is that you keep her tempted to eat by offering her lots of treats and watch closely for other symptoms: and of course, the others too, just in case they should start having similar problems.

My guess is that the strange poo could be a direct link to the medication she is on.

DO keep us informed how she is doing!

Best wishes

xx
