Feed Question

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I'm getting my (green eglu) and two hens at the end of the month and I can't wait!

I have a quick question, having read this forum it seems alot of you girls and guys add stuff to your feed, so I was thinking can you get pellets that already have say, garlic powder and bokashi bran already added?

It seems a lot of work to get your feed than add garlic powder bokashi bran, tonic etc. I hope there's a lazy already mixed option, lol!

Cheers all!

Dan

Hi Dan, welcome to the forum and congrats on ordering your chickens.

I have to say that when my lot first arrived they just had good quality layers pellets and that's all. So I wouldn't worry too much at first. See how you go before buying loads of stuff.

Yes, I do now add other stuff to their feed but not everyday. Garlic powder (from horse supply shops) does help reduce poo smell and I do use this. Bokashi, I have a bag of this but I don't use it very often. I only got some when one of my chickens had the squits (as it can help firm up poop) but now I don't bother so much. However, some people on the forum swear by it.

If I had my time all over again, my top tips to buy (which I didn't get for ages when my hens first arrived and now wished I had) would be :

1. Auboise (or similar hemp horse bedding) for the run floor, nestbox and sprinkle in poop tray.

2. Mixed poultry grit - they will get this free ranging but I like to ensure they always have a pot in the run (it helps grind the food up in their tums).

3. Wormer. I personally use Flubenvet every 3 months routinely but there are many many other options if you search this forum. Not needed straight away for new hens but I left 10 months and really shouldn't have.

4. Buy a treat bowl - heavy dog bowl or similar - my hens recognise their treat bowl and follow me to the ends of the earth if I have it in my hands. (or even an eggcupful of mixed dried corn thrown into the run, great for getting them back inside)
