My (cube lilac) is ordered and due to be delivered on the 1st of July with a GNR and a PP . I am busying myself in the meantime with getting my garden sorted out (extra fencing being installed on Monday to divide the garden into hen and human areas) and making endless lists of chicken related goodies to purchase.

My 6yo DD is already beside herself with excitement.

However, this afternoon I got a call from Omlet. They had had a cancellation and could deliver and install on Friday of this week!

OMG!!

For a moment I was sooooo tempted!! However, (perhaps for the first time) I took the grown-up decision to wait until the original delivery date. The aforementioned DD is taking the day off school and I really want everything to be sorted before all sorts of chicken-induced mayhem breaks loose!!

It was a close call, but I think I made the right decision...

I had to wait a few weeks for my (cube green) and with hindsight I needed the weeks to prepare and gather all the bits and bobs needed. Good luck but you need more than two chickens of course....

are you going to get some more, I got two GNR and 3 other hybrids

I think next year I will add a couple of youngsters to keep the numbers of layers going

Any more then??

indie :)

self control, I would say so.... not only holding off 'til July but only getting TWO CHOOKS? that's positively masochistic

Yes, it is good to have a bit of time to read up on stuff and get all those hen essentials.

Most definitely!! As soon as the cube arrives, I'll be off to Thornes for 3 hybrids. My DD is keen to have different coloured eggs, so I'll check out what's available.

!eggwhite!!egggreen!!eggbrown!!eggblue!!eggcream!!eggspeck!

Any suggestions?

Most hybrids lay creamy to beige-y egg, but there is some variety.

Pepperpots have a bit of maran in them so their eggs are a bit darker. My sussex type hybrid (a silver sussex lookalike) lays very pale cream-coloured eggs. My bluebelle lays slightly speckled brown beige eggs.

Columbines/Fenton Blues type have a very good chance of laying a blue/green/olive egg - any hybrid with a bit of Legbar in them (those chooks with a quiff) will have a good chance. there are lots of us who adore this type of hybrid and the pure breeds they come from.

You do need to think about the timing of introducing new hybrids to your Omlet girls: ideally you should do it within a day so that the pecking order isn't yet established with the omlet girls... if you leave it later then that, you'll have to go through a long-ish introduction to quell the blood-lust that is the pecking order!
