My Pekins have always had thick and hard scales on their feet where the feathers grow out. The other parts of their legs and feet are softer. I've always assumed that this was normal for Pekins, but now I'm beginning to wonder if they've actually got scaley leg mite, particularly as I've just adopted 3 more that are quite a bit older and yet there feet are soft and pliable everywhere.

 

I was going to treat them with ivermectin as a precaution, but I'm worried about the egg withdrawal. Then I noticed Claret suggested dunking in 10% Poultry Shield. Does that treat scaley leg mite too? Can you carry on eating the eggs?

I don't have Pekins so don't know what their feet should look like but would it help to see a photo of my Molly when she had it?

 

I dunked her foot in surgical spirit and spread vaseline all over it at bedtime. Cleared up no problem .

Thank you for the photo. their feet don't look anything like your hen's right one.

Is her left foot normal? Mine have the same big scales down the middle of their toes, but they are more lifted than that, rather than lying flush with their skin.

Yes, her left one's normal. If the scales are raised, that is a sign of scaley leg mite . Perhaps someone with Pekins would be better advising you .

If you have any doubts, treating with surgical spirit and vaseline as ANH suggested wouldn't do any harm
