A new statue has been unveiled today in Liverpool portraying a chance meeting between Ken Dodd and Bessie Braddock, 2 Liverpool Icons! Bessie Braddock was a Liverpool MP and apparently she was responsible for the Lion Mark on British eggs. The statue shows Bessie... ...holding an egg in one hand. Apparently, so her former political agent Sidney Jacobs told me, she made a "very great speech" at Westminster over the importation of foreign eggs, suggesting British eggs be denoted from then on by a lion mark.So next time you see the lion stamp on the side of your boiled egg, you'll know that'd down to Bessie. http://culturechat.merseyblogs.co.uk/2009/06/doddy-and-bessie-in-bronze.html I would have loved to have met her but she died the same year I was born. How weird is this: My dad was born in Liverpool and he could see the Welsh hills and Moel Famau from his bedroom window then he worked in wales still living in Liverpoool.
