Mealworm Breeding

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this but I'm sure one of the mods will move me if its not! :D

I bought some mealworms from Wigglywigglers back in March and have grown lots onto the beetle stage, some have been beetles for over a month now but I haven't had any new baby mealworms yet. :( I've no idea if they've laid any eggs even as they are apparantly too small to see.

Does anyone know how long it should take to get babies?

Has anyone had success with breeding their own mealworms?

Thanks

:)

I am just about to jump into the murky world of mealworm breeding. The more natural the food I can get for my hens the better.

I think it can be quite a few weeks before you get some more meal worms. If you do a search on google for mealworm breeding, there a quite a few decent videos on there with info on.

I have done a bit of research on the web and the lifecycle is 3 to 5 months on average. A lot of this is dependant on tremperature.

I don't expect to get much food for the chickens this year and am really treating it as a bit of an experiment to get some experience. Next year will be the year when I hope to be able to try and use a bit less man made chicken feed.

Cheers,

Carl
