Empty Chicken Pen

Recommended Posts

My chicken run is currently empty apart from the soil that they dig in. I want to kit it out for them with things for them to climb on and keep themselves busy.

If you have any suggestions or photos of your pens I would be very interested in seeing them for some inspiration.

It depends how big your run is. Mine is about 5ft tall and about 8ft square and I have put in there two small logs with a beam between for them to practise their gymnastics on. They have some old tree brances to hide under and climb on, and they also have a wooden garden bench to hide under and shout from the top of. The ground is covered with wood chippings so they can have a good scratch around.

Hope thats of some help :D

Both my runs have perches of various heights and thickness, an old wooden chair, logs,a dustbath ( which is ignored ) and my new run has two tables in it for standing on or hiding under.

I've only the one picture of a corner of the new run .

I've made a few changes since this was taken, moved the perches and the concrete

block , it was dug up when we were levelling the ground for the run and stayed put as it was too heavy to move :o , it's been put to use now as a step to the coop as the silkie didn't like using the ladder

cool!

My run is 4ft high, the back is 12ft and the front it 6ft and its 6ft wide kinda an L shape with the coop on the outside tucked in the middle of the L.

I bought from b&q a reduced shoe rack for £5, turned upside down the i thought they could sit on it or hide under it. Got some branches/ large twigs from some fallen trees in my local forest (was easy to find after the big storm we had other day! lots of fallen tree bits!)

Got some woody plants to plant in the run so they can wreck them, eat them, hide in them etc, a really thick broom handle type thing to cut and make some perches with and finally a bag of natural wood bark for mix in with the soil so they can dig about...

any other pictures and suggestions would be great, going to make a start tomorrow on sorting out the run.
