Jumping and egg production

Recommended Posts

Interesting line in a Pets at Home chicken leaflet.

"Suspending treats from a chain can make them more of a challenge but avoid making the chickens jump as this interferes with egg production."

What do you reckon? I'd never even given this a second thought. I have a cabbage suspended about two inches above their heads; they seem quite happy to jump up and egg production is fine.

I guess at the bottom of it, is the thought that if the egg inside the hen is broken before it is laid, it can result in peritonitis - I think. I seem to remember a post about hens being spooked by hot air ballons or low flying aircraft and being afflicted in this way.

Or did I dream all this??

I know I'm not a chicken...but...

It reminds me of when I was expecting my first child and my mother-in-law told me not to raise my arms over my head (I was hanging out the washing) because the umbelical cord would get wrapped around the baby's neck!
