Help ! Not sure if I'm over worrying ! SAD UPDATE

Recommended Posts

hi

I noticed yesterday that betty seemed alittle quite but when was time to range or for treats she was really into it. Today I haven't been with her much but this afternoon I let them out to range and the other two ran off all excited and she just plodded along. I wondered if she was hot and sprayed them all with water and it seemed to perk her up and she joined in with others scratching and bug hunting. I gave them a frozen corn on the cob and she ate it excitedly with the others. But this evening she has gone quiet again and when I checked on them just before nine they were all roosting except for her - she was sat in the nest. I have just checked on her again and she was still in the nest. I stroked her and she just sat there, normally she would fret abit, then I slid my hand under and she stood up. She was making a couple of chickeny sounds hard to describe, but five mind later when I checked again, she was still stood up in the nest. It's hard to say how much she has eaten and drank but her crop felt fairly full and not hard or uncomfy, although I gently massaged it earlier and she brought up a tiny amount of clear fluid which I assume was because I was massaging her crop. Outwardly she seems well - deep red comb, shiney feathers etc. I checked her over, no mites/fleas etc, vent clean and normal looking. She feels abit bony but she is the lighter and dainest of the three anyway so don't think I need to be concerned about her weight. I'm hoping it's just the heat, but I've got myself in abit of a tiz, as I keep thinking she will be dead in the morning ! Does anyone have any theories ???

check her crop again first thing, if it's empty in the morning and full in the afternoon/evening then I don't think there's anything to worry about.

This heat is awful and when you're wearing a duvet, it must be very uncomfortable! Try not to worry.

I was going to say she might be broody if she won't leave the nest but she's not laying yet is she? Maybe she's just getting ready to lay.

Don't massage her crop as you should only do that if it's impacted.

Oh thanks for that ! I don't think she has laid yet, fairly sure the other 3 eggs have come from florrie. I did wonder if she was getting ready to lay as florrie I have noticed goes abit quiet and restless although I have seen her took into the pellets. Hopefully I'm worrying for no reason and that it's just the heat bothering her.

I went to get the girls up this morning and betty was still in the nest - i suspect she has been there all night. She eventually got up and plodded down to the run, the other two ran out all excited, drinking, eating etc. I saw betty have a drink then while the others were feeding, she took herself off to the corner and just stood there. I got her out and checked her crop. It still feels like there is something in there, but not very full and soft ie not hard.

I just don't know what to do :(:(

Thought I might phone the breeder this morning.

She still looks good though ie bright, shiney feathers, eyes and deep red comb.

Am I missing something ????

i'd take her to the vet if you can, just to be on the safe side. tia was like that at the beginning of the week and went down hill so i took her to the vet, she's got an infection and had antibiotics and has perked up already. i hope betty feels better soon

I phoned my breeder who said it sounded like she was suffering from the heat, she seemed to perk up when srayed with water, but this morning she still wasn't right although her apperance was still one of health. However, 5 mins later after getting stuff ready to take her to the vets i work at, she died ! Absolutely gutted !

One of the vets I work with did a post mortem and she had egg peritonitis and some tumors in her stomach, so she was sadly doomed from the start and he said there would have been nothing he could have done for her.

I've only had her a short time, but I am so upset, I can't believe how quickly I have become attached to them. Matilda and Florrie are doing great, and Florrie is on the nest now popping an egg out !

I called the breeder back to let her know what had happened and she was very upset about it.

My eldest son who is 4 took it all in his stride ! When i was sobbing he said to me "all animals die mummy, even chickens" ! How sweet !

Very sorry to hear it.

Did the vet indicate at all whether this was an older hen?

I don't want to add to your distress, but this sounds a very unusual state of affairs for a POL pullet.

Not specifically but I asked if could happen even though she yet laid her first egg and he said yes, but I phoned the breeder and she said that hens coming into pol can suffer with this including prolapse, in her fifteen years it's only happened three times, but was just unfortunate that as a new keeper of chickens it happened to me so soon. She was very upset and is eager to hear how my other two fair. Florrie is becoming very regular with her laying but Matilda is yet to produce any eggs.
