Where to find ex-battery hens?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

We've recently bought a second hand eglu to rescue some ex-battery hens. We contacted our local BHWT coordinator about a week ago and she doesn't know the next date the hens will be arriving, and that they are already fully booked (but she said there was a chance that some people might pull out). I have also looked at the BHWT re-homing calender and can't see a date for Kent and haven't seen one for a while. The next nearest place is Chichester and that's too far for us, and the hens, to travel.

The eglu is looking rather empty at the moment, and we would love to rescue some ex-batts soon. Would anyone know a rough date when the hens would be collected? Or would anyone know any other places we could rescue them in East Sussex or South Kent area?

Thanks.

Well done for wanting to home ex-batts! Rehoming and nurturing our ex-batties is one of the most rewarding things I've ever done.

You could try Hen Rehomers UK, although I know their next rescue isn't until September.

The problem all rehoming organisations have is that they don't usually know until the last minute when the hens will be going so it is usually a bit last minute.

My veterinary practice gave me the details of a local chicken farm that replaces its birds when they are 18 months old because of the requirements laid down by the organisations that buy its free range organic eggs.

I know it's not quite the same as giving a home to an ex-batt, but at least my two Columbian Blacktails will not have a premature end to their lives.
