helen5848
Hi, i've seen a few of your posts that have mentioned that your hens have become increasingly noisy over the last week or two and possibly linking it to the weather. I have had exactly the same problem and was wondering if anybody haad any tips? One hen in particular has taken to shouting at about half seven every morning - their routine is to be let out at approx 7.00, (they are locked in all night), but she has a bite to eat and then starts crowing - it's really annoying as I rreally don't know what she is shouting about and she does it without fail every day! It's even more annoying I should imagine for the neighbours who for the past week have had their windows open every morning! I have tried everything, extra treats hung from the run, extra leftovers, extra mash. Even after my night shifts all last week, I stayed up for an hour, in the garden on chicken watch - armed with a spray gun ready to stop her in her tracks - one day she didn't crow and I really thought I had cracked it - but she has more han made up for it this weekend! This morning I tried leaving the girls locked in for a bit longer - only to hear her shouting at 7.45 from within her hen house. I am particularly desperate for tips - as i am on day shifts all this week, the hens will be let out at 7.00 and I will have left for work by 7.15 - so i really won't know what noise she has made (until an army of angry neighbours descend!). Patricia W
Extend the night by covering the house and run - must be both, with the darkest fabric you can find. We use a very large piece of black stuff that you buy from garden centres to suppress weeds. Without it our cockerel shouts at 6am - or earlier - with it, this morning it was 8.40. And then that was me opening them up that triggered that. ( I thought he might have died actually - that was a record!) Try it - it works Tricia
