Ragged chicken

Recommended Posts

I seem to have 2 really ragged chickens at the moment.

The first one's feathers seem to have gone really fine, she has lost almost all under her belly and the ones on top of her back seem to be either snapping off short or have gone almost see through/grey and fluffy instead of firm and black. She started in about February and I thought she was moulting but this has gone on too long now I think. Wings and tail are fine.

The second one has got a huge bald patch on her back. About 2 months ago I fitted them all with bumper bits but every time I see feathers starting to grow on her, they disappear in a few days so i can only presume someone is still managing to peck them out.

Number 3 is absolutely fine.

I have checked them all and can't see any signs of creepy crawlies on their feathers. They seem happy in each others company, I have been treating the eglu with Red mite powder and they are wormed regularly. They seem to be laying reasonably well, had a few 2 egg days over the hot weather but nothing out of the ordinary.

I have fed them a few portions of Tuna and some maggots but how often am I supposed to feed this to them? They are most of the day in the eglu run but get at least 4 hours a day running wild in the garden.

They seem happy in themselves but they look like ex-batts. Any advice???? :wall:

To me it sounds like the one who is Ok is the culprit. The advice I read was to remove her and wait until feathers are all grown back before integrating her.

I don't think it is that they don't get on, I understand it is habit or boredom. Perhaps when in the run they need a bit of distraction and something to occupy them? :?:D
