About a month ago Hilda had a burst egg inside her. It looked like a deflated balloon which we were able to remove. Our other chooks were pecking at her bottom so she is rather bald there now. The pecking has stopped but she is still very bald and what few feathers she has got are look very manky. I can't see any blood or mites around her vent area.

 

We are only getting one egg a day which I think is from Raquel as Betty has gone broody (on week 4/5 now) and despite trying to snap her out of it I have completely failed!

 

What should I do about Hilda's vent area? Do I just keep bathing it?

you could try sudocrem. (not licenced for poultry) good for sore botties(on hens too)

They should regrow now, but I would use some purple spray to put the others off. Mine will have a good look at a bare bum even if its not red!

I thought my other half was having me on when he said I'd had a reply recommending Sudocrem! We have plenty of that as we have a 6 week old!! Will pamper my poorly Hilda this week

Jules, I used Gentian Violet Spray on Stella when she had a strange egg sticking out of her behind and others were pecking. I used it mostly because there was a touch of blood and I wanted to mask it.

 

The others did stop pecking her bottie. But 3 months on, she still has the odd purple feather. Doesn't really help when you are a white chicken

 

Here she is purple bottomed and having a bath.....!!!

Henwatch -glad to see Stella's purple bum and hear that she got over her egg problem eventually.
