Hello

You'll have to excuse me, I've never used a forum before.

I am relatively new to keeping chickens, had my 6 for just over a month now.

I'm ready to start selling eggs to my neighbours but I have a fear of there being a worm in the eggs. I know that this can only happen if the chickens have a bad infestation of worms and mine are okay at the moment.

I would however like to know about candling. How is it done and would I be able to see a worm inside?

Teresa

Hiya and welcome!

You can buy a candler which is a very strong torch, you put it to the end of the egg in a dark room and you should be able to see inside, I would have thought that a worm would show up. A maglite (or similar) or led torch (use a loo roll tube to focus the beam) Dark eggs and blue eggs are very hard to see in to so if you have those you might be on to a loser

I have never heard of a worm being inside an egg though but do admit that I am worried someone will come back to me one day having found something inside one of the eggs i've sold

Thanks for the advice both of you. I shall give it a go.

I intend to worm them regularly. I've had my chickens 5 weeks and they are 22 weeks old. Do you know when I should worm them?

Teresa :)

I don't think theres any reason why you can't now. Have then been done before by the breeder?

I use Flubenvet which is really easy to add to a weighed amount of food and feed it to the hens which is done every 6 months :D
