Hi,

 

May seem a bit thick, but I have not fed my chooks maggots before but want to see if it will help Flo who has a hard crop. How many maggots do I give her, how often and and can my other well chooks have some also as a treat ?

 

Will they come out of the other end dead ??

Hello Liz.

 

I would feed her a fair few. The maggots will wriggle their way through the impacted crop and hopefully clear the blockage. At least a couple of times a day, just to help her crop. The protein will do her some good too.

 

You can feed your other hens the maggots too, it won't do they any harm. The maggots won't survive.

just get 1/2 pint. feed the lot in 2 goes.. then you won't have to suffer them in a pot inside your fridge, 1st time about. If you were neare I would nip over with some.!

Morning all

 

Well, I gave them all some maggots, they all seemed pretty keen first of all, then not so interested, perhaps they were quite full up anyway.

Flo did have a fair few though and has had some again this morning as her crop is still hard. She will have them three times today. At least I know where to get them from.

Have also given her a syringe of cod liver oil and a little massage.

Sounds perfect Liz, hope it works. Try adding a small amount of honey to water and dripping some onto her beak, they tend to drink the drips. It is important to keep her hydrated.

 

Massaging and oil does help to loosen the blockage, so that is also good in conjunction with the maggots.

maybe stewed apples too, (or baby puree if short of time)

I would keep what she eats to "wet" stuff till it is empty.

Hope maggots start to shift it or it's a vet job!

Have made a list and will get cooking when I get in

Honey, haven't got any, but will get some on the way home.

 

We will keep going with this for perhaps another day before I take her back to the vets

 

I am assuming a camera down the throat would confirm whether it is a blockage and if it is, will they be able to remove it ? I do hope so as she is such a sweet chook.

Don't know if Claret or Egluntine ore someone that knows would be able to help. I don't know if they can look down with out putting her under anyway.. AND the blockage would be inside a full crop.(if you follow.)

I think the idea of the honey is to encourage drinking and dissolving sugar will do the same, and sloppy stewed apples all fluid.

If you are at work now, lets hope the wrigglers are wriggling their way through & dis assemling any thing blocking... alwys assuming it is something organic & not rubber or something or the unthinkables a growth.

Yes, I am hoping that the maggots are doing their job too !!

OH massaged and gave oil again before he went to work this afternoon, said it felt a bit better ?? I will see when I get home and continue the treatment.

 

One of my other chooks had a camera down her trhoat before (under) and she was fine. I am hoping having read other posts that if there is a blockage then our vets will be able to operate. I will book an appointment this evening for tomorrow anyway, just in case as I don't want to delay much longer - this has been going on for weeks, poor chook.

 

I will update again at the end of the week
