vikpow
my 18 week sold RIR has something wrong with her- she is hunched up, very sleepy and not making any noise at all. If we go near here she doesnt move. Also, she just had a poo and it was very strange- a clear liquid and bits of white in it. She hasnt started laying yet. Any ideas what os wrong with her? we've brought her in the kitchen at the mo. Thanks in advance

Plum
Hello she sounds poorly. Have you given her a check over? I would check to see if she's lost weight by how she feels when you lift her. Check her vent and see if that area is clean and if there are any signs of lice or mites and whether she's soiled herself. I'd listen to her breathing again for rattling and look at her eyes and nostrils for any discharge. Check her crop is full which it should be in the evening and check it again in the morning to see if its emptied and note if there is any smell. The loose poo may be something or not. If they have drunk a lot because of heat its loose or if they have eaten lettuce or something like that. She's a bit too young to be having trouble with first egg but it may be worth just gently palpating her below the vent to see if you can feel an egg there. If you have her in the kitchen I'd keep her quiet and make sure she has a drink and let her sleep for the night. Hope she has picked up by morning. vikpow
Hi All, Just an update on Poppy- it was her firsdt egg! we kept her in the kitchen for a bit with my fiance massaging her and she then laid a softie! she is fine now but laid another softie yesterday. Is there anything i should be doing or is this normal when they start laying? the free range all day and also have a bowl of grit at all times which then never use! Thanks for your help
Olly
It's pretty much normal when they start laying, if they are free ranging all day then they probably pick up all the grit they need. You could add limestone flour to give more calcium, but I would reckon it's just because her egg-laying gear isn't quite ready yet.
Plum
Congratulations even if it wasn't quite ready. Glad it was nothing more serious, like Olly says lots of them have problems with first egg or two before it settles down.
