Anyone got Welsummers?

Recommended Posts

I have recently got 2. Phoebe and chicken(don't ask) They are only young approx 14 weeks but they seem to be flying/ flapping quite high already :o

I am now worried they will escape over the wall onto the main road. Did you have to clip the wings on yours and how old do they have to be to do it?

I don't like the thought of clipping their wings as it could help them escape a fox attack but don't want to have to shut them in either.

Not sure what to do for the best. Phoebe nearly made it onto the wall today and its 6ft Eeek!

Personally I ould clip the wings, only one wing on each chook to unbalance them

Welsummers can be quite lively or so I have read

Clip the wings now, and check agan every few months to see if they have moulted ouut the feathers (depends on how old they are)

My welsummer is 15 weeks now and very calm as well. We let the little girls in the fenced off area whilst the big girls were locked in their run and the only one to escape was the Cream Legbar who pushed her way through the bottom of the omlet netting she is so skinny  The welsummer didnt flap anywhere and was quite easy to handle.

Hi :) ,

We have 2 welsummers, Wendy and Wilamena GNRGNR . They are both lively and the most flighty out of our 13 hens. We clip 1 wing on each bird and that stops them going over our 4 ft fence. Before they were clipped they would flap over it without any effort. I strongly recommend clipping their wings. It is really easy to do and the hens don't even move when we do it. We don't use anything posh, just a pair of good kitchen scissors from wilkos.

If you are worried about foxes, there is 2 things you can do to try to prevent them visiting your garden. The 1st is walk around the chicken area everday. This leaves your scent there and the foxes will pick up on it. Even better is if you can walk a dog around your chicken house. If this is not possible, collect your hair that comes out on your hair brush and hang it in the fabric of old tights on the fence. This will give off the scent of humans being present and the fox will be detered.

Hope this helps
