Bald Bum?!

Recommended Posts

Hiya,

Our Black Rock and one of the White Stars has had a bald bum  and tail base. First I thought they were just malting but its been like it for some time now. I've treated them for mites but the feathers just don't want to come back!

Any ideas? Do they sell knickers for chickens?!

You have probably got a secret feather plucker and eater. They can be quite sneaky and once they have been pulled out a lot it can take some growing back because the skin hardens.

My Light Sussex had a bald bum all last year and only regrew the feathers after her moult.

I had this issue with 2 of my 3 a few months ago, and still do. I treated them for mites, bugs, lice etc... no joy. Their bums are still red and bald but they're eating, drinking, playing and being cheeky as usual so I am not sure what to do!

I used the anti-peck spray they sell on here but it didn't make any odds, in fact I saw them plucking themselves right after use!

Thanks for all the replies. We've had a good look for creepy crawleys but can't see anything. Its been like it for some time now :( They seem perfectly happy but look a mess! Will give them another inspection tonight and re treat them all with the powder and see how we go.

Thanks again!

Yep-bald bums here too :D

Roses skin looks really red and has done for way over 18 months now.

All three of my hens wear bumper bits and they all get treated for mites, lice and worms.

They too are happy, eating, preening etc so I give up. Maybe it's a chicken fashion thing we don't know about

What are Bumper Bits?! :D

A small plastic device that sits inside the chooks mouth - rather like a horses' bit!

After an initial sneeze or scratch the girls seem to instantly forget about them. They're biodegradable and so will eventually fall off.

Available from the Wernlas Collection. Contact Sue Hammon on 01584 856 318.

We luv 'em!

Kind rgds,

Pat & Steve
