Cleaning Routine - So many products

Recommended Posts

Sorry quick newbie question

My (cube green) cube comes in a weeks time and I am just ordering the cleaning products I need for Margot, Beaky, and Peggy (sorry, we have named them already  )

I am thinking our cleaning routine will be poo picking run now and again, replacing whole bedding every couple of months or so.

Washing cube with bucket (trying not to get run wet) once a week using poultry shield and giving it a jet wash when bedding gets replaced once very couple of months.

Once cube is dry dusting diatom in cube and run area (once a week).

Does this sound reasonable to keep nasties away?

Also do I need Stalosan and Red mite powder aswell or does it do same job as the other two?

Something tells me the girls house will be cleaner than ours

I clean the poo trays twice a week and put DE in the cube then, have not had to use red mite powder, fingers crossed, cant live without cirtronella for the run and poo tray to keep away flies, I clean the garden area they have twice a day to remove poo and the run also, will invest in mite powder when re ordering DE.

I got the girls 17th May (six of them) and use it all the time on the roosting bars and nesting box but still have loads left, so think I will get 5 or 6 months out of it. Remember to put some in their food as well to kill parasites (Im by no way an expert but it is working for me_

We bought our (cube blue) because it was easy to clean and unattractive to red-mite, it being plastic!. We just hose the (cube blue) out every 3-4 days, change the bedding and move it and the run to a fresh site. So far we haven't had any problems at all. Also we're not too sure or keen about using chemicals on the (cube blue) . But then our chooks free-range for a good part of the day. We've only had our chooks for 2 months, so this is the voice of novices, but we're pretty well read n the subject, we think........

The bedding in the nest box we change weekly, but the stuff in the run only gets changed 6-8 weeks or so (depending on how much they have been in there, and when I have the time etc).

Stalosan F I think is great - don't need straight away at all, but certainly helps reduce smells as well as any nasties, especially if you are keeping the run in the same spot like we do. I was amazed at what a little bit of pink powder could achieve!

Good luck with your new chooks! Bet you just can't wait!!
