Had my mum on the phone yesterday in tears. So sad. Her ex-batt, Alice, had just died in her arms.

She'd been on holiday for a week and my brother (Who still lives at home) was in charge of the girls and did a sterling job. (Thankful he didn't have to deal with a chook dying on him while mum was away!) Alice was fine on the saturday apparently. She has got sterile peritonitis though, so we know she was on borrowed time. My mum went out just to say hello to the girls and noticed Alice's breathing was very laboured. She was coughing up goo so she tipped her upside down and loads of it poured out of her beak (Sorry if your eating), her breathing got worse, periodically stopping, her comb was turning blue until it was all over in under 2 minutes, she'd slipped away. Poor lass. Poor mum.

 

Alice had been her favourite since she'd nursed her back from being a baldy ex-batt.

 

So our question is... Was this the peritonitis that finally took her or should we be worried about something else that may pass on to my mums remaining two girls?

As a precaution my mum has washed everything, cleaned out their house and raked out all their bedding in the run to replace with fresh.

Was it just one of those things?

Sorry to hear about it.

 

I'd say it was the peritonitis. I have lost three to peritonitis this year, and they all eventually got the breathing difficulties you describe.
