Moving with hens

Recommended Posts

Blooming typical. Just as I get my set up just about perfect, it looks like we might be moving. Now, I've already made it quite clear that I won't be going anywhere without my girls  , but was just wondering if anyone else has moved with hens? How did you manage the logistics? How did the girls cope with their new surroundings?

Ours went on holiday for the last 2 weeks, while we went to Scotland! Not quite the same, but involved moving them.

We packed up the eglu, run etc, put the chickens in a dark box, and then transported everything 20mins down the road to my parents.

They were not bothered by the move at all. Kept laying (even a couple of double yolkers I am told!) and no problems going to bed at night etc.

On Saturday they moved back home again, and again, no problems, and on Sunday morning we had another double yolker!

Perhaps if you are moving, you could move the chickens first (i.e. the previous week) to a friend/family, move you all, and then bring the chickens to the new house a week or so later? Would save having to worry about them on the big day!

Ah, see, my ladies don't live in an eglu, and if we do move there's a good chance that taking their current home with us won't be possible :( I'll make sure that they have a wonderful new hen palace at the new house, but I am worried about how they'll react  My plan would be to have everything set up first, and to move the hens last (and preferably under cover of darkness). It's taken me a year to get the set up exactly right here, so I'm a bit :( at having to start again. That said, I do have plans.....
