Fighting over the nesting box

Recommended Posts

hello, new members here. We have two chickens in a standard model Eglu, who both lay every day. Lately their egg-laying cycles seem to have coincided as we have witnessed the amusing site of two chickens playing musical nesting boxes. One is on, then she gets off, the other jumps on, the first chicken prowls around grumbling away then it's all change on the nesting box again. Eventually one gets off and there are two eggs in the box. The nesting box is not big enough for two chickens to sit side by side, has anyone else encountered this problem and found a solution?

I have 1 nest box between 3 hens and they all sort it out between them.

This morning two wanted to use it at the same time so they kept swapping about and both ended up laying so I don't worry too much to be honest. Before long they will probably be using it at different times again so it should be ok :D

Ooo, welcome to the forum by the way :D:dance:

Thanks - we thought they would sort it out between themselves but just wanted to know if others had the same problem. Our two are Rocky, a Black Rock, and Lou, a Lohmann Brown, both around 6 - 7 months old and prolific layers who prowl the garden all day like feathered panthers, very tame though.

Although we have two separate houses, both with nest boxes, our five all insist on both sleeping and laying in the same one. Causes punch-ups occasionally, but if one decides to go into the other box, the others all have to as well! I'm sure there's some chicken logic in there somewhere, but they always sort it out in the end.

hey

I'll be honest and say this sounds like very civilised sorting out of the nesting box. I have three boxes but they like to use one in particular and i had to start to interfer when one was sitting in the nesting box with one climbing and jumping on the one sitting, one trying to drag the jumping one out by the wing, one trying to drag the sitting one our by her tail feathers and one standing in the house screaming. My garden regually hosts WW3 where nesting boxes are concerned. It doesn't matter how many they have they will only ever use the same one. They change which one is the favorite but all 5 always use the same one.

Sounds like our two are quite well-behaved then! Apart from when the pair of them break into the part of the garden where I am trying to grow vegetables, that is....we have had Rocky since mid April, and the chicken we got at the same time died suddenly at the beginning of June - no idea why, we were told sometimes chickens have an inherent weakness of constitution. Anyway, we obtained Lou the next day so Rocky would not pine, and the two of them ganged up together immediately. We know when we hear an almighty racket out in the garden that is Rocky crowing away like a cockerel, announcing to the world that she has just laid an egg, whereas Lou just quietly gets off the nest and goes about her usual business with no fuss. Strange creatures indeed.

My 3 were all having a row about the nest box this morning, lots of bok boking and to-ing and fro-ing then suddenly 3 warm eggs by 10.30 :D

In our new house and WIR we have 5 pullets one of whom is laying every day and when the others start they have 2 largish nest boxes between them, but it will be interesting to see what arguements it causes.

My Light Sussex likes to take her time when laying whereas the other 2 just get the job done without too much fuss, i have seen 2 in the nest box at the same time especially when we had 4 in the Eglu and they just seem to sort themselves out.
