When can I mix my young girls with my existing flock?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!!!

My girls are now 16weeks old and I don't know when they'll be old enought to mix with Jasper and his flock. I've got a mixture of marans (plus one white star I think: Snowdrop is a bit of a mystery really).

I've looked in all the books and on the net, but can't tell!

I just posted for the first time and then realised that I've not introduced myself! My name is Lucy, I'm 33yrs old, I live on a farm (although we don't farm as we now have fishing lakes, restaurant and wedding venue), and I've been keeping chickens for nearly 2yrs.

I started with x2 warrens, Sam and Ella (my husband got the girls from a local farm and the coop made for our 1st wedding anniversary), who I quickly joined with Chuck, my wonderful Light Sussex cockerel. Sadly, 6months later, he got snatched by a fox at 4pm in the afternoon. He gave a good fight though.

I got another cockerel, Marmaduke, but he was seriously henpecked at his last place and was never really right. After converting a shed with a 20 metre walled run and taking in x6 rescue hens, Marmaduke went to meet his maker and was replaced by Butch, a bantam Light Sussex. As my girls are free range all day and only in their run from 4pm (to avoid Mrs Fox), he escaped. He was then replaced by the fabulously beautiful Jasper, a Maran cock, who brought his beautiful wife Judy, a copper necked Maran. Unfortunately the girls picked on Judy, but luckily we found Butch (who had set up home above a fox den??? as he's a psycho), so they set up home together for 6months until my warren girls went to friends and I got x6 more Maran hens (Petunia, Violet, Lily, Rose, Primrose and Snowdrop, my random white one). I then got Butch x2 girlfriends his own size (Betty, a Light Sussex Bantam and Matilda, a black Bantam or Miniture Hen: I don't know which, but she lays bluey/greeny eggs).

Then this year's spring came and the broody chaos began. Judy had x10 chicks on Easter Sunday, but one got squashed 3 days later. However Bella,Currant,Custard (the only white one), Figgy, Licorice, Mulberry, Pancake, Raisin & Treacle have grown to be wonderfully good natured, healthy, but loud teenagers, thus my cockerel problem as there are x5 of them.

Sadly, as Judy was used to being free range and was cooped up with x9 teenagers, she went a bit batty, so we moved her back in with her peers. Tragically a few days later, Jasper and the girls got spooked by something outside over night and Judy suffocated in the corner. I was devastated!!!

Matilda has x5 babies (Chutney, Mustard, Pickle, Relish & Salsa) who are now 6 weeks old. Mustard is the only white one and is the only boy. He is a very pushy and aggressive baby boy who 1st pecked me at 2 weeks old. I don't know what I'm going to do with him?!?!?!

Since Matilda went broody and moved out, Butch was sexually harrassing Betty, I got x2 Sussex Bantams, Margaret & Barbara. All x4 have now moved into a 20'x20'x6' high run with a new, fancy coop with plenty of room for when Matilda moves back in.

So, after this extremely long intro, here are my chickens;

Jasper & his girls: Petunia, Violet, Lily, Rose, Primrose & Snowdrop

Butch & his girls: Betty, Barbara & Margaret

The late Judy's babies: Bella, Currant, Custard, Figgy, Licorice, Mulberry, Pancake, Raisin & Treacle (x4 girls & x5 boys)

Matilda & her babies: Chutney, Mustard, Pickle, Relish & Salsa

I also have;

My beloved 12yr old yellow labrador Jake

x2 quail girls called GoGo (Italian) & Jackie Brown (Japanese)

x2 Chinese Dwarf Hamster girls

x3 fish Roly, Poly and Dumpling

I'd be very grateful is someone could help solve my cockerel problem!!! Lucy xx
